Gypsy Wind's History

Gypsy Wind Kennels began in 1981, with a 5 year old Golden Retriever (Tasha's Ginger Snap UD CanCDX...aka Ginger) that Karen had put a Utility title on, and obtaining a show quality Golden (Goldtrak Wayward Gypsy Wind CD...aka Windy) and a top obedience prospect (Gypsy Wind Legend Kan–do CDX CanCD...aka Gypsy). Karen was "into" obedience, and Gypsy was her dream dog. Unfortunately, cancer took Gypsy at a young age.

Don decided we needed to have conformation quality dogs. He was, as his wont, investigating and reading about Golden Retrievers. His possession of "The Complete Golden Retriever" by Gertrude Fischer at a business meeting led to business discussion being changed to a discussion of the Golden Retriever with Lin Cummings, breeder of the great Ch. Cummings Gold–Rush Charlie. Lin put us in touch with Jeff Pepper for a show quality prospect. Thus we obtained Goldtrak Wayward Gypsy Wind, Windy, and began our conformation foray.

After several years of frustration, handling classes, and learning to lose, we finished our first Golden, Ch. Ashwel's Gypsy Wind EZ Breeze. Bred by Myra Moldawsky, Breezy was the ultimate Golden "lady". She produced our Ch. Gypsy Wind's Night Moves, Moody, one of our bred by champions. We also produced Ch Gypsy Wind Smrcrk Zuni Bear, owned and shown to his championship by Christine Smith.

We decided Goldens were great, but we were hooked on conformation and wanted to do some more winning. Looking for a breed that was less popular in the show ring, Don chose a Newfoundland. Gwen came into our life, and Don put some points on her. Unfortunately, she had hip dysplasia, and we placed her as a pet.

About that time, my three year search for a Kuvasz conformation prospect came to fruition. Our friend and professional handler, Mary Billman, found a puppy at Oakhill Kennels that might fit our requirements. Luckily, the kennel is in Michigan, and I took a ride one evening to meet Nancy McGuire and the 9 week old puppy which would be known as Ch. Oakhill's Panache o'Gypsy Wind.

Panache was more than we ever expected. She became the top female in the country for four years with Karen showing her. Her get, produced with her half–brother Ch. Oakhill's Xarda by Tiza, numbered 18, with 8 champions and 1 CD. She was a tough female, who truly knew her job was to guard and protect. That did not prevent her from be a great Mom.

Ch. Oakhill's Panache o'Gypsy Wind produced the following titled Kuvasz:

CH Gypsy Wind's Esmeralda Mira was a very sweet puppy, fourth pick out of 4 girls. She basically chose us, and went on to be a beautiful lady. She produced a litter of puppies for Szumeria Kennels on a lease arrangement.

Gypsy Wind Mesha Of Oakhill CD - Mesha went to a family in Wisconsin, where they did obedience training and put a CD on her. She produced a litter of puppies for Nancy McGuire under the Oakhill Kennel name.

CH Gypsy Wind's Nikolai Nik finished his championship in 8 days, going Best of Winners in 6 shows. He had great temperament, and was a very big boy!

VITO Head Shot

CH Gypsy Wind's Vittorio Vito was a once in a lifetime dog. He placed in the group several times, including two group ones. Regal, with a beautiful temperament, he was Karen's dream dog. Frozen semen available to appropriate bitches.

CH Gypsy Wind's Harvest Moon Harvey was a beautiful male, who won whenever he went in the ring. As his brother Vito was being campaigned, Harvey did not get out as much as he should. He tragically died of bone cancer at the young age of 6. Frozen semen available to appropriate bitches.

CH Gypsy Wind's Arctic Blast Archie was one of the clowns of the Kuvasz world. He loved jumping on top of crates, and playing with his sisters.

CH Gypsy Wind's Cold Snap Snap was sold to Szumeria Kennels, where as a brood bitch she produced many champions. Snap had more energy than any dog I have ever seen! She was a lovely bitch, and should have done more winning!

CH Gypsy Wind's Feather'd Rain Feather had a great temperament, and was a good sized girl. She produced two litters for us. Unfortunately, the offspring were not as good as she and her siblings.

CH Gypsy Wind's Frosted Pumpkin Pumpkin, being shown by a neighbor's daughter, had the temperament to fit her name. She was a sweet, little pumpkin, and maintained that temperament all her life.

We hope you have enjoyed seeing the origins and Champions of Gypsy Wind Kuvasz.
